Industrial Relations Commission of NSW

New Deputy President for the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW

The Minister for Industrial Relations, the Hon. Sophie Cotsis MP, today announced the elevation of Commissioner Anthony Howell to Deputy President of the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW.

Commissioner Howell brings extensive experience to the role.  His legal career commenced at the Commission more than 20 years ago when he worked closely with three of the Commission’s judges over a four-year period.  Commissioner Howell then served as the Assistant Secretary of the Police Association of NSW before practising as a barrister at HB Higgins Chambers for over a decade during which he acted in a wide range of matters before the Commission including Chapter 6 road transport proceedings.  He was appointed as a Commissioner in June 2025.

Commissioner Howell will be formally sworn in as a Deputy President by the President in chambers on Monday, 10 August 2026.

President of the Industrial Relations Commission, the Hon. Justice Taylor, welcomed the appointment, stating: “Commissioner Howell is an outstanding industrial lawyer and decision-maker.  His elevation provides a much-needed boost to the Commission’s presidential ranks.  In his new role I am confident he will make a significant contribution to maintaining a strong and effective industrial relations system in NSW."
