The Hon. Justice Monika Schmidt AM was sworn in as Acting Deputy President of the Industrial Relations Commission and Acting Justice of the Industrial Court of New South Wales by President Justice Ingmar Taylor in a private ceremony on 20 December 2024.
Acting Justice Schmidt AM was appointed as a judge of the Industrial Court of NSW and a Deputy President of the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW in 1993 and as a Deputy President of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission in 1998.
Her Honour was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW in 2009, and also sat on the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. She became an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court in 2019.
Before her judicial appointments, Acting Justice Schmidt AM was a partner at two Sydney law firms where she contributed significantly to the development of case law in industrial and employment matters.
Acting Justice Schmidt AM was also a lecturer in industrial law at the University of Sydney, and her Honour was awarded a Member in the Order of Australia in 2019 in recognition of her services to the judiciary and industrial relations.
